The Lyrics.:

Rescue me

The following song facts were taken from http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4407

The Four Tops recorded this in just 2 takes, and had practically forgotten about the song until it was released, assuming it was a “Throwaway” album track. Motown boss Berry Gordy had other ideas and released it as a single. Gordy had a knack for identifying hit songs, and got this one right.

The Motown songwriting team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland (Holland/Dozier/Holland) wrote this. They told lead singer Levi Stubbs to sing like Bob Dylan on “Like a Rolling Stone,” which explains the urgency in his lyrics. Phil Spector once described this as “Black Dylan.”

Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent sang backup. They later went on to form the successful vocal trio Dawn along with Tony Orlando.

Song Title: Reach Out and I’ll be there.
Artist: The Four Tops.
The Lyrics.:

Now if you feel that you can’t go on (can’t go on)
Because all of your hope is gone (all your hope is gone)
And your life is filled with much confusion (much confusion)
Until happiness is just an illusion (happiness is just an illusion)
And your world around is crumbling down, darlin
reach out come on girl reach on out for me
reach out reach out for me
I’ll be there with a love that will shelter you
I’ll be there with a love that will see you through
When you feel lost and about to give up (to give up)
Cause your life just ain’t good enough (just ain’t good enough)
And your feel the world has grown cold (has grown cold)
And your drifting out all on your own (drifting out on your own)

And you need a hand to hold, darlin
reach out come on girl reach out for me
reach out reach out for me
I’ll be there to love and comfort you
And I’ll be there to cherish and care for you
I’ll be there to always see you through
I’ll be there to love and comfort you
I can tell the way you hang your head (hang your head)
Your not in love now, now your afraid (you’re afraid)
And through the tears you look around (look around)
But there’s no piece of mind to be found
(no piece of mind to be found)
I know what your thinking,
You’re alone now, no love of your own, but darling
reach out come on girl reach out for me
reach out reach out………. just look over your shoulder
I’ll be there to give you all the love you need
And I’ll be there you can always depend on me
I’ll be there to always see you through
I’ll be there to love and comfort you

Born. 25 March 1942, In Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Aretha Franklin’s music is steeped in the traditions of the church. Her father, Rev. C.L. Franklin, was a Baptist preacher who, once he had moved his family to Detroit, became famous throughout black America for his fiery sermons and magnetic public appearances. He knew the major gospel stars Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward, who in turn gave his daughter valuable tutelage, along with two other sisters Erma and Carolyn. At the age of 12, Aretha was promoted from the choir to become a featured soloist. Two years later she began recording for JVB and Checker.

Song Title: Papa’s gotta a brand new Pig Bag
Artist: Pig Bag
The Lyrics.: Ho ho ho …..there aren’t any. Pigbag was founded in Cheltenham in late 1980 by Chris Hamlyn. Chris, who at that time was studying Fashion at Cheltenham Art College recruited multi-instrumentalist Roger Freeman, (an old friend from his hometown Birmingham) along with Chris Lee on trumpet and James Johnstone, a guitarist and newcomer to the alto sax, for some wild and crazy jam sessions. Taking place anywhere from the local park (playing up trees was a fave pastime in those days) to the bedroom of his student rented house (painted completely black except for the ‘tribal graffiti’ which he later adapted for the ‘Papas’ 7″ sleeve), these early improvisations formed the basis of what was soon to become Pigbag. The house, Beech House, is still standing on the North-East corner of Clarence St and St Georges Place in Cheltenham. After a couple of months they decided to expand the line up and become a ‘proper band’ with a drummer, bass player, amps, rehearsals etc. etc. Around this time Andrew “Chip” Carpenter (drums) and Mark Smith (bass) both old school mates of James’ and former members of his previous band Hardware, were recruited for some informal rehearsals. It was at these jam sessions that ‘Papa’ was developed, from an idea Chris Hamlyn had before the band was formed. When Hamlyn heard Simon Underwood had left The Pop Group he decided to invite him to join the as-yet un-named band. Through a friend who knew Mark Stewart (Pop Group vocalist) he got hold of Simon’s address and Chris and James both hitched down to Bristol armed with a tape of those jam sessions. Much to their amazement Simon agreed to join the band, later suggesting his old friend Ollie Moore as tenor sax player. Through Simon’s connections with Dick O’Dell (at the time managing The Slits and running Y Records) they soon got their first gig supporting The Slits at Bristol’s Romeo and Juliets. They played a twenty minute version of what was to become ‘Papas’ and the crowd went ape. The next day Dick invited them to record the track for his label Y Records. It was time to find a name. Chris Hamlyn was rarely seen without his pig bag, and thus Pigbag were born.
Dobie Gray (born July 26, 1940?) is an African American musician / singer best known for his song “Drift Away”, which was one of the biggest hits of 1973 and still remains a staple of radio airplay. Gray grew up in a family of sharecroppers, and discovered gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister. He also soaked up the R&B and country music of his surroundings, and in the early ’60s he moved to Los Angeles to seek his fortune. Before adopting the name Dobie Gray, he recorded several singles under the names Leonard Ainsworth, Larry Curtis, and Larry Dennis. His seventh single, “Look at Me,” became his first chart hit in 1963, but his true breakout was a 1965 recording of “The ‘In’ Crowd,” whose Motown-style bounce distinguished it from jazzman Ramsey Lewis’ celebrated version. Gray hit the Top 20 with “The ‘In’ Crowd” and also had some success with the follow-up, “See You at the Go-Go”; this period — spent mostly on the small, poorly distributed Cordak, Charger, and White Whale labels — was the most soul-oriented of his career. It would be some time before Gray returned to the charts; in the meantime, he pursued a concurrent acting career, eventually spending two and a half years with the Los Angeles production of Hair. During his Hair years, Gray also sang with the band Pollution, which recorded two albums on Prophecy beginning in 1971. In 1972, Gray resurfaced as a solo artist on MCA, with producer/songwriter Mentor Williams in his camp. Gray promptly scored the biggest hit of his career with the Williams-penned “Drift Away,” which hit the Top Five in early 1973 and remains an oldies-radio staple today. The subsequent “Loving Arms,” written by Tom Jans, grew into a much-covered repertory item, recorded by singers from the realms of rock, country, and R&B. Gray’s own sound was shifting more toward country as well, and when he moved to Capricorn in 1975, he recorded in Nashville with new songwriting collaborator Troy Seals (he eventually relocated there permanently). Gray’s popularity in Europe and Africa was growing steadily, and he managed to talk South African authorities into allowing him to play to integrated audiences during the apartheid era. Gray’s tenure in Nashville was marked by a commercial downturn, but his increased activity as a songwriter — mostly in a country vein — resulted in covers by the likes of Don Williams, Charley Pride, George Jones, and John Denver, among others. The disco-flavored “You Can Do It” became his final Top 40 hit in 1978, the same year he recorded the first of two LPs for Infinity. When Infinity went bankrupt, Gray concentrated exclusively on songwriting for a few years, then re-emerged on Capitol in the mid-’80s as a full-fledged country artist. He made the lower reaches of the country charts with singles like “That’s One to Grow On” and “From Where I Stand,” but found it impossible to break through to a wider country audience, and again faded from view after two albums. In 1997, Gray released Diamond Cuts, a mix of new songs and re-recorded past hits. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide He was born in Texas although the exact place is unknown; (Simonton being one of the most generally agreed on locations). There is also some argument as to his date of birth, but it is generally placed in the early 1940s. His birth name is also disputed, being listed as “Leonard Victor Ainsworth” or “Laurence Darrow Brown”. Gray moved from Texas to California in the 1960s, where he was mentored by Sonny Bono and later took up residence in Nashville, Tennessee. Gray had other hits though, with songs such as “The In Crowd” in 1965, and “Out On The Floor” a whole decade later.

Song Title: Out on the floor.
The Lyrics.:

Hey, Hey, Hey (backing vocals).

You want to read more about the Velvelettes then do what I have to do and search for it. Good Luck. There is a lot of information out there but for some reason some folk slam a copyright on the details. Shame really because that means I can not link you to their website. So we show a photograph of the Album sleeve that I found in my personal record collection. Once again shame because I really love their music and would like to supply more info.

Song Title: Needle in a haystack.
Artist: The Velvelettes
The Lyrics.:

(“Doo-da-lang” scat singing over first 2 lines):
Well well, I once believed all fellas were nice
But girls, listen to me, take my advice
Girls, you’d better get yourselves onto my track
‘Cause findin’ a good man, girls, is like findin’ a
(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls? (Needle in a haystack)
(x2): (She-doop, she-doop, la la)

Girls, those fellas are sly, slick & shy
So don’t you ever let ‘em get you starry-eyed
Well, you may think their love is true
But they’ll walk right over you
Now girls, you should know these things right off the back
‘Cause findin’ a good man, girls, is like findin’ a
(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls? (Needle in a haystack)
(x2): (She-doop, she-doop, la la)

(instrumental)

Now girls, I say I’m tellin’ you the natural facts
‘Cause findin’ a good man, girls, is like findin’ a
(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls? (Needle in a haystack)

I’m tellin’ you, girls, you’d better look before you leap
Still water sometimes runs very deep
You’ll be sorry when you just jump
& do justice passed by love
Girls, you should know these things right off the back
‘Cause findin’ a good man, girls, is like findin’ a
(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls? (Needle in a haystack)

I say you’d better take heed (needle in a haystack)
Listen to me (needle in a haystack)
(“she-doop” scat singing over next 4 lines):
You’d better play hard to get
Or you’re gonna regret
The day you were born, girl
When he leaves you alone, girl
Good guys are like findin’ a (needle in a haystack)
Girls, they’re like findin’ a (needle in a haystack)
…& fade

Song Title: Mustang Sally.
Artist: Sir Mack Rice
The Lyrics.:

Oh the ignorance of many people. I did not know (until I started my research) that Sir Mack Rice wrote this ditty. I hope that Mack Rice gets a few pennies for each radio broadcast of his composition Mustang Sally, though somehow I doubt it. First Wilson Pickett, Mack Rice’s partner from a band called the Falcons in the early years, made it a smash hit in 1966, then came the Commitments, who probably had never heard of Mack Rice, they made it world famous in the late 80′s with their soul-less version. I guess many radio stations are playing it around the world right this minute as I am writing these very lines. But whose version? I’d say 80% to the Commitments, 20% to Wilson Pickett and no-one plays Sir Mack Rice’s original version. But Sir Mack Rice had a recording career that includes not only Mustang Sally. In fact it included an original version of another good Wilson Pickett hit, albeit a much smaller one, Mini Skirt Minnie. His career as a writer continued to flourish in the early 70′s with compositions such as Respect yourself (for the Staple Singers), Cheaper to keep her (for Johnnie Taylor) and Do the funky penguin (for Rufus Thomas). However I found an unusual but fast becoming a favorite of mine a Mack Rice track called Love sickness, more on this later.

Mustang Sally
Guess you better slow your Mustang down
Mustang Sally , baby
I guess you better slow your Mustang down
You been a runnin’ all over town
I guess I’ll better put your big feet on the ground, oh yes, I will

All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)

One of these early mornings
You gonna be wipin’ your weepin’ eyes, yes you will
I bought you a Vintage Mustang
Of nineteen sixty-five
Now you comin’ right signifyin’ woman, no
You don’t wanna let me ride

Mustang Sally, baby, yeah
I guess you better slow your Mustang down, yes you will darling, I hope you will
Going around running’ all over town
I’m gonna put your big fat feet on the ground, oh yes Sally, well, look at here

All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is just ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is just ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
All you wanna do is ride around, Sally (ride Sally ride)
One of these early mornings
You gonna put your bad bad feet on the ground, oh yes I will, Sally

Sally (ride Sally ride)
Sally (ride Sally ride)
